The Daisycutters – a quartet responsible for some of the most ‘hummable’ tunes to come out of QLD in the last decade- are poised to release their 3rd album, considered by many to be their best work to date!
Recorded by good friend Darren Middleton of Powderfinger at his own studio in Brisbane, the new album reflects a refining and maturing of the band’s sound.
Produced by the band and 2 of Brisbane’s brightest stars – Jeff Lovejoy (Midnight Oil, Cruel Sea) and Mark McElligott (Powderfinger) the album draws from many classic influences and expands the band’s ever growing musical palette with a liberal splashing of piano, organ and vintage mellotron added into the mix.
These new colours are a perfect garnish to singer/songwriter Cameron Wilson’s heartfelt ‘kitchen sink dramas’ – a murky world of late drunken nights, retrospective hangovers, hook ups and break ups – always the observer, the voyeur – always the bridesmaid…never the bride!
The band are still riding high on the release of their 2006 CD ‘Lines and Sinkers’ (The E.P Years) which saw the band nostalgically revisit their extensive back catalogue – all of their past radio singles finally made available on the one album for the first time!
The collection also included possibly their most memorable tune - a sweet little slice of Queensland pop – “Sick Day”.
An enormous radio fave, the song was also chosen to be the soundtrack to a ‘MasterCard’ advertising campaign enjoying massive prime time TV rotation in 2003!
The Daisycutters’ debut album - “Awake Among The Sleepers”, released in August 2004, left the critics unanimous in their praise, setting the bench mark for impassioned, un-pretentious rock n roll in this country. Melbourne’s “Beat Magazine” promptly making it ‘album of the week’ and hailing their debut as …”one of the best albums you are likely to hear all year”!
Opening with a huge serve of “pissed off” with the first single “We don’t need ya” the album set radios alight across the country with its 3 film clips enjoying rotation on Rage, MTV and Channel V.
The success of the album saw the band relentlessly toured the country consistently wowing crowds with their electrifying live shows - sharing the stage with The Hellacopters, The Living End, You Am I, Eskimo Joe, Shihad, Rocket Science, Killing Heidi, The Whitlams, and many more -including several Big Day Out’s!
Like all great bands, success was a while coming - after bursting on to the late 90’s Brisbane music scene the band soon garnered a reputation as a formidable live act. A self financed E.P – the blistering “Gift Horse” soon saw The Daisycutters sign a deal with Mushroom Publishing, who after actively pursuing the band, released their sophomore E.P “Caffeinated and Wide Eyed” to critical acclaim in July 2000.
The E.P featured the hits “Between the Buildings” and the effervescent “Kiss me Stupid” which enjoyed high rotation on Triple J, and spent 11 weeks in the “Net 50” peaking at number 8!
“Caffeinated …” also enjoyed airplay on MMM, RRR, B105, ZZZ and a host of national community stations - finally debuting in the top 5 on the Australian Independent Charts and spending 12 weeks in the top 10 – peaking at number 2!
With growing interest from overseas, due largely to Mushroom Publishing’s placement of the band’s music, the band are currently negotiating the release of their first 2 albums in Europe.
“The Daisycutters…are perhaps this country’s most under-rated band!”
